Say yes and figure it out later “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes â€" then learn how to do it later!” Richard Branson, Founder at Virgin Group. It’s all too easy to convince yourself that you can’t do something whether it be a trying a new sport, meeting new friends, or taking on a new challenge at work. However, there is no such word as can’t â€" especially in a work environment. There have been many occasions over the years when I have been asked to do a task that I am unfamiliar with. My automatic response has always been ‘yes’. Even if at the time I didn’t have the slightest idea where to start, I never let on to my boss. I always knew I would figure it out in the end. Not only does this type of ‘can do’ attitude speak volumes to your employer, it also instils an inner confidence in yourself, pushing you out of your comfort zone â€" which is something I relish. It’s all in the mind It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to something. Harbouring doubts and negativity is effectively meeting failure halfway, so you must get yourself into a positive frame of mind. When you take a on a new challenge, you will inevitably feel some degree of stress, and panic may start to set in. You may feel you’re less experienced than everyone around you and that you don’t have the skills needed. These thoughts slowly chip away at your self-confidence. Here’s a few tips to help you tackle feelings of self-doubt: Set attainable and realistic goals Recognise and celebrate your successes, even if they are small and to others may seem insignificant Keep learning and developing your skills, and teach others what you know Find a mentor Get stuck in Once you have conquered those feelings of self-doubt, you must throw yourself into any new projects with energy, focus, enthusiasm, and most importantly, with a ‘can do’ attitude. After all, your work attitude is now just as importance as your work aptitude, so let it shine through. The benefits for your career are undeniable: A positive ‘can-do’ attitude in the workplace will help you get noticed by your boss and other senior stakeholders for the right reasons, increasing your chances of promotion or a pay rise.
